candle care + safety.

important information regarding safe use of our candles.

  • do.

    • remove all packaging before lighting the candle
    • make sure that candles are placed in a fire-resistant candle holder, or placed on a heat-resistant surface
    • keep candles away from furniture, curtains, clothes and hair
    • leave at least 10cm between burning candles
    • put out candles before leaving the room, and before you go to bed
    • use a snuffer or spoon to put out candles
    • keep candles, matches and lighters away from children and pets
    • keep the wax pool clear of matches and other debris to prevent flaring or the formation of secondary wicks
  • don't.

    • put them under shelves or in enclosed spaces
    • ever leave a burning candle unattended
    • blow out candles, it can send sparks and hot wax flying
    • use candles in, or near a tent
    • move a candle when it’s lit
    • place a lit candle somewhere with a draught
    • burn a candle for longer than 4 hours at a time

jar candles can become extremely hot when in use, please be careful of handling the glass whilst the candle is lit, and immediately after extinguishing.

allow it to cool down before you handle it.

the first burn.

when you receive your candle, there are a few steps to take with the first burn to ensure you get the best out of it:

  1. remove all packaging from the candle and recycle it
  2. trim the wick to approx. 0.5cm before lighting
  3. once lit, you must allow the wax pool to melt fully, otherwise you will experience ‘tunnelling’ (see more about tunnelling below)
  4. only extinguish once the wax pool has achieved full surface melt

when your candle comes to the end of its life, don’t let it burn any lower than 0.5cm of wax. if you let it burn completely dry, there’ll be no wax left to absorb the heat and you risk the glass overheating and potentially shattering.

help us continue the life of your candle jar when it’s finished by keeping it as a pen pot or a tealight votive, or you might have another creative idea to reuse it!

all you need to do is pour some boiling water in the candle jar (with extreme care), to melt the remaining wax. once the water and wax cools, simply remove the wax puck from the surface of the water, pull out the wick, and voila an empty jar! give it a quick wash with some warm water and dish soap, and it’s ready for a second life.

don’t want to keep it? simply recycle your empty & clean jar at home, or your local glass recycling bank.

we are exploring the possibility of returning the jars to us to be reused, or offering refills, but these are not currently available.

tunnelling.

tunnelling is when your candle doesn't achieve a full melt pool on the first burn, and subsequently never melts to the edge of the glass again.

it may surprise you to learn that wax has memory! if you melt it right to the edge on the first burn, it will always burn to the edge, if you don't, it will tunnel.

even though it is unsightly, it is easy to remedy. all you need is tin foil!

use a small piece of foil to wrap around the top of the candle, creating a dome-like structure (ensure you leave an opening at the top!). this will reflect heat from the flame back down and melt the tunnelling wax. once it's fixed, it shouldn't need doing again, but you can repeat if necessary.

if your candle continues to tunnel it could:

  • stop burning on its own if it runs out of oxygen around the wick, or the surrounding wax melts and drowns the flame or,
  • finish burning, but without consuming all the wax which leads to a shortened burn time.
